Healing, Hope and Happiness
from addiction and despair

Cavanaugh Treatment Program

Located at the CADA Adolescent Treatment Center, the Cavanaugh Adolescent Program is a high-intensity residential treatment program for adolescents.  It is owned and operated by the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse of NWLA, and is licensed by Louisiana's Department of Health and Hospitals.  We are preferred service providers for Blue Cross Blue Shield, ValueOptions, United Behavioral Health, and Medicaid. Other commercial insurance payment arrangements and private pay agreements are available.

Since 1989, the Cavanaugh Treatment Program has had a contractual relationship with the Louisiana Office of Addictive Disorders to provide residential levels of care for adolescents who are diagnosed with addictive diseases.

The program provides a structured, safe and therapeutic environment utilizing intensive staff support for adolescents age 12-17.  This is a 30-day program and usually is an adolescent's first experience with an out of home placement for treatment of their substance abuse. We accept referrals from all over the state.  Services available include:

  • Individual, group, and family therapies
  • Recreational therapy
  • Chemical dependency groups
  • Relapse prevention groups
  • Didactic and substance abuse educational lectures
  • 12-Step recovery community groups

As with the residential program, we utilize a system of positive praise and rewards and non-punitive consequences.  Our therapeutic environment promotes stability, structure, self-control, and responsibility for one's own actions.

The educational component is fully integrated into each client's individual treatment plan. While in the Inpatient Treatment Program, adolescents attend classes on-site in a classroom. All clients attend school with a certified teacher.

The clients who are in the Adolescent Residential Program (Halfway Program) attend public school or GED preparation classes in the local community.  Some of our clients also attend college or technical school if they have already obtained their high school diploma or GED.

Staff and Licensures

All counseling staff for the Cavanaugh Adolescent Program are registered, certified and/or licensed by the state of Louisiana to provide substance abuse treatment, and are mandated by the state's regulatory authorities to participate in ongoing training and prescribed supervision.

All clients are approved for admission and reviewed weekly by the Medical Director who holds a specialty in the field of addictions. The Medical Director and Nurse Consultant are available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. In the case of an emergency, clients are transferred immediately to an acute care facility such as LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.

The facility is licensed by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.

Typical Day for Our Clients

The inpatient Adolescent Program clients go to school in the morning and then return to the unit for a group. After lunch, the clients are allowed to go to the gym and play basketball or exercise.  After returning from the gym they attend another group or lecture and also meet with their individual counselor. They attend outside community 12-step meetings several times a week in the recovery community.

All of the clients have the opportunity to go on weekend outings as long as they have advanced to the appropriate level and are doing well in the program.

Dorothy Cavanaugh

Formerly located in Bossier City at the Cavanaugh Treatment Center (now CADA Bossier Treatment Center), the Cavanaugh Adolescent Program was named for Dorothy Cavanaugh, a former director for the facilities' programs who was instrumental in the Adolescent Inpatient Program creation and implementation in the community. Dorothy began her membership in the CADA family as a counselor and dedicated much of her professional career and personal time to helping adolescents with addictive disorders until her untimely death in 2003.

True Stories

Corey’s Story

Today is a year since I left the Adolescent Program of the Cavanaugh Treatment Center. I had to write to express my deepest gratitude toward you. I truly appreciate everything you did for me. Every morning I wake up and I thank God for putting you and the Center in my life. I miss the people. At the time, I didn’t like the people but now that I look back, I love every single one of them. It’s weird how that happens.

Since I’ve graduated from the program, so many things have appeared in my life. Opportunity after opportunity comes my way. My life has been given back to me immensely; more than I deserve. I’m learning more and meeting so many people. The program (of recovery) never ceases to amaze me. It’s so awesome!

In the next few months, I will be moving and going to college in Lafayette. I received a band scholarship - my most recent blessing. I’m the best trumpet in the band, but I wasn’t when I first got home from the Center, so I practiced really hard and there is another miracle. People say “I’ll never be able to do anything since I messed my life up by drinking.” It’s what you put into it because I’ve tested it and it’s true.

I love you so much and I’ll remember you in my prayers.
